Sealed bids for the new city hall came from several local contractors. W. H. Gragg secured the contract for 5454 with B. H. Moody as supervisor and Mc Ghee Brothers handling brick work. Construction to start by the first of June after minor details are settled.

North Carolina Court Orders New Trial for Newsome Murder Case
The North Carolina supreme court ordered a new trial for Larry Newsome of Wayne County who was convicted of murdering 14 year old Beulah Tedder and sentenced by Judge Grady to die in the electric chair. The trial occurred on a Sunday amid strong local feeling against the Negro.

Pastor Selected to Lead Oxford Masonic Orphanage

The Watauga County Democratic convention will meet at the courthouse on Saturday June 9 with J L Wilson as county committee chair issuing the call. Township primaries are set for May 26 at 2 PM to elect delegates, and if attendance is low, attending Democrats will be seated as delegates. The event selects delegates to the state convention in Raleigh June 12 and forms precinct committees. Watauga has 16 delegates and 16 alternates to Raleigh.

Anti Smith Candidate Fined for Drunkenness
Arthur Talmadge Abernethy mayor of Rutherford College and anti Smith candidate for congress pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Rowan county court Salisbury. He was fined 100 dollars and barred from operating a car for three months after admitting intoxication from stimulants taken after addressing a crowd April 28.
