The Massachusetts Legislature weighs a bill to prohibit pistol manufacture in the state, arguing pistols exist to kill and invite attack while rifles and shotguns are used for sport. The note compares gun culture to Irish political influence and cites broader social implications.
In 1880 six women in blue bonnets and capes landed at Castle Garden as the Salvation Army advance guard sent by General William Booth toAmerica. Their mission to aid the poor and elevate the distressed earned broad respect among churchgoers and soldiers in France.

Captain Alfred Mordecai, long stationed with American forces at Fort Mills, Philippines, says he plans to leave on the 11th and be away three months. He fondly recalls reading the Democrat from Luzon and includes a photo of an Igorot couple. Three shipments of 240 hogs will be sent from Cumberland County in April.
Miss Ruth Coffey and Mr. Remme Porter will air from Station WBT Charlotte Sunday at 2 30 pm for thirty minutes of violin and piano. The broadcast tests may determine if an extended contract is signed. Coffey, daughter of Mrs. E S Coffey, teaches piano at Appalachian State Teachers College. Porter, native of Arkansas, teaches violin at Greene Inn and is praised by local music lovers.
Lee Greene 68 of Stony Fork Township died at his home last Wednesday after a long illness from heart leakage. Funeral services were held at Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with pastor officiating. Surviving are six sons and three daughters, with most children present except Mrs. Ray in Seattle.
About sixty high school students from nine schools gathered at Lees-McRae College on March 21 to study personality. The event featured devotional by Rev. Smith, talks by Kenneth Foreman and Dr. Robert Yost, group discussions, personality diagnosis, and a banquet. The conference, emphasizing character building, will return next fall.
Wade Brown aged 21 son of Mr and Mrs J D Brown of Blowing Rock passed the Bar Association exam in February and was sworn in as a practicing attorney by His Honor Judge Harding. He is a Wake Forest College student and is hailed as a swift rising member of the local bar.
Fire of undetermined origin razed the W. H. Gragg home on North Water Street Thursday night. Loss estimated between 12 000 and 15 000, with about 10 000 in furnishings. Family was away at a lyceum performance. fire department saved nearby structures and did not remove contents. Insurance partially covers losses. building plans uncertain.
Blowing Rock readies a community day rally for Saturday under G C Robbins and E G Underdown. Volunteers will work on school grounds, plant shrubs, and prepare a big dinner. activities include a minstrel show, band performances, and a poster contest with prizes.
Republican county convention moves from April 14 to April 7 at the Boone courthouse. The change follows the Lenoir congressional convention set for April 10. Precinct meetings occur April 5 to select delegates. Watauga County has 14 delegates and no other business is expected.
A. C. Gayle of KWKH addressed over 150 Watauga merchants at Boone courthouse urging independents to unite. He blamed chain stores and mail order houses for economic ills, warning wealth centralization could impoverish the middle class. The Merchants Minute Men formed last December to fight chains. Old Man Henderson of radio fame presides.
The Republican Executive Committee of Watauga County named census enumerators for townships. Top exam papers were by Mrs W O Bingham, Miss Ruth Bingham, and Mr Z T Watson. Appointees include Boone Mrs Paul A Coffey and others across Blowing Rock Blue Ridge Bald Mountain Cove Creek and more.
The fourth instalment of the equalizing fund totaling 641671.2 was mailed to counties by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Watauga anticipates just over 5000. Past instalments in 1929 and 1930 brought the total to 4899053.72 for six month schools and rural supervisor salaries.
Spainhour announces Thrift Week Sale Event on two pages of The Democrat this week with special dry goods offers and a promise of future monthly repeats. Other new ads include Central Tire Goodyear popularity record, Carolina Stores groceries, Pinehurst Farms Ayrshire cattle, Blowing Rock Light and Power utilities, Boone Drug Sargon, and Reynolds Camel cigarettes.
Judge W F Harding of Charlotte opened the Spring Term of Watauga Superior Court Monday. He urged the Grand Jury to uphold law observance, praising education as a curb on crime and recounting Boone’s improvements since 1916. About seventy criminal and civil cases await trial. many involve prohibition offenses.
Howard Snyder of Beaver Dam was jailed Saturday on forgery charges after presenting two checks to the Watauga County Bank with forged signatures drawn on J. P. Wilson and A. C. Mast. Assistant cashier P. A. Coffey flagged the discrepancies and alerted police. Snyder, from a prominent local family, was released on bond that night. A Greene County county agriculture board has been organized with Taylor Barrow as president.
