Finley to preside at spring term superior court

The Spring Term of Watauga Superior Court begins Monday April 10 with Judge T B Finley presiding. Solicitor L S Spurling will prosecute about twenty criminal cases while about sixty civil cases are calendared. Recorders Court will not hear civil matters until after the term. Jurors for two weeks are listed by Clerk A E South.

Legion Post Endorses Roosevelt Pension Stance

McBride Named Tax Supervisor by County Board

J Smith McBride of Sherwood has been appointed county tax supervisor by the Board of Commissioners and assumes duties, succeeding Henry J. Hardin after a four year term. McBride, a Boone merchant and local farmer, named a slate of tax listers for the year, urging taxpayer cooperation during the listing period starting April 1 and warning that willful failures to list are misdemeanors.

Plan to organize a County Ball League

Niley G. Cook announces a meeting of ball players in the county courthouse Saturday at 8 p m to form a county league. All teams may send reps and a permanent organization of at least eight clubs is hoped. Plan calls for Saturday games with a playoff between the two top high teams, possibly in Boone.

Yonahlessee Road Nears June 1 Opening

Construction on the Yonah lessee Road proceeds despite poor weather. Culverts and bridges are nearly finished, with only two small ones remaining. Stone surfacing is underway, and contractors anticipate full opening by June 1 to showcase scenic views through the Southern Appalachians.

Tax Collector Office Created in Watauga County North Carolina

A bill in the North Carolina House would create the office of tax collector in Watauga County and appoint A D Wilson to serve until July 1 1933. The sheriff’s salary would drop to 75 dollars a month and the tax collector would handle all tax duties with bond, daily deposits, and twice monthly reports. The act would take effect after ratification.

Recorders Court in Busy Session

The Recorders Court convened in regular weekly session Tuesday and disposed of only six cases. Judge Ludreth fined drunk drivers $100 and costs with six months on the roads suspended. Names include Fred Greer jailed for driving drunk. Grady Walls also fined $100 plus costs and six months suspended.

Mountain City Banks Open For Business In Tremendous Show of Deposits

Mountain City Tenn banks reopened Thursday and posted new one day deposit records with no withdrawals. I W Nave of Merchants and Traders Bank and J A Shull of Bank of Mountain City praised the surge saying saddle-blanket bills poured out of the mountains in unprecedented volume.

John Owens Dies at Home in Valle Crucis

John Owens aged 40 died at his home near Valle Crucis after several weeks illness from a chronic respiratory ailment. He is survived by a widow and seven children. Born near Elk Park he spent much of his life in West Virginia before moving to Watauga County about a year ago to farm on Dutch Creek. An electrician by trade he aided his brother at the Owens Machine Shop. Burial was in Cranberry with Elder J M Deaton conducting brief services.

Blowing Rock Bank Opens On Unrestricted Basis Friday

The Bank of Blowing Rock resumed business on Friday after a telephone order from State Bank Commissioner Hood. Deposits and new accounts were reported, gold coin and certificates forwarded to the Federal Reserve Bank, and Boone banks were expected to reopen early next week. Officials from Watauga County Bank traveled to Raleigh to secure a license amid holiday backlog.
