More than a hundred descendants of the late Rev. W. C. Parks gathered at the State Fish Hatchery near Boone for an annual reunion. Surviving daughters Mrs. S. M. Greer Mrs. E. S. Coffey and Mrs. J. F. Spainhour attended along with numerous relatives from North Carolina Virginia Tennessee West Virginia and other states. A luncheon followed the social hour with a partial attendee list including Gov. R. A. Doughton and many extended family members.

Local Showers Break Protracted Drought Around Boone
The drought that crippled crops eased with a strong shower around Boone on Monday night and a hard shower midweek. Farmers report potato damage from dryness though late cabbage plantings may still benefit. Early potato varieties fared better and yields are reported as good in many areas.

Jefferson B Councill 27 superintendent for Burlington Mills died in Highsmith Hospital Fayetteville after a ten day illness. Dula Leads State Medical Examinations in 96+ Average

Highway Beautification Plan Begun by State Highway Commission
Raleigh August 1 is set as a general clean up day on highways and Arbor Day will be observed with roadside planting. The State Highway Commission leads a beautification program with division engineers in charge of their areas and a hoped for friendly competition to show yearly progress. Land owners are asked to cooperate as unsightly signs junk dumps wrecks and rubbish heaps are removed from sight of the highways.

Mrs S J Barnett Dies in Boone After Illness
Mrs. S J Barnett died at her Boone home Tuesday afternoon following several weeks of illness. She was 58 and widowed two months ago. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4 PM at Boone Baptist Church, Rev P A Hicks officiating, with interment in the city cemetery. Survived by one son, five grandchildren, five sisters and four brothers. A native of Wilkes County, she had lived in Boone eight years and was a longtime Baptist.

Local Officers Seize Illicit Booze and Arrest Two Men
Deputy Sheriff Clint Norris and Policeman R Switt arrested Leonard Carlton and Clarence Lew is at the Carlton home near Devil's Gate on Thursday after finding five gallons and three quarts of illicit liquor. Both men posted $500 bonds and were released after waiving examination. Norris recovered more liquor the next day and renewed the search the following morning, totaling additional quantities. This follows a prior large haul and a year with eighty five plus arrests for prohibition infractions.

Dr Edward M Madron a longtime Watauga County dental surgeon died at the home of his son Dr Paul Madron in Mountain City Tennessee after months of declining health He was born near the North Carolina line in Johnson County and later moved to Watauga County where he married the late Mrs Madron who died seventeen years ago He leaves two sons Dr Paul Madron Mountain City and Dr Horace Madron Butler and two daughters in Tennessee Funeral services were conducted Friday at Mountain City Methodist with interment in the family burying ground.
