Grace Hospital at Banner Elk Nears Occupancy

The four story native stone Grace Hospital at Banner Elk rises with a sixty bed capacity under the Edgar Tufts Memorial Association. It mirrors Lees McRae College stone work across the ridge and aims to open next winter with Dr. W C Tate and Dr. R H Hardin continuing service. Five thousand dollars remain to secure a Duke Foundation gift, though partial advance has funded the project.

Gastonia Doctor Visits With Rankins This Week

Dr McG Anders formerly a popular Gastonia physician and his family visited Dr and Mrs J D Rankin at the start of the week. Kathleen Crawford former head nurse at Watauga Hospital accompanied the group. Anders keeps a summer home here and many friends were glad to see him.

New Blowing Rock Civitan Club Charters At First Ladies Night

Blowing Rock Civitan Club, youngest offshoot of Boone group, held its charter night with 100 guests from across the state at Blowing Rock Hotel. Russell D. Hodges presided as toastmaster Ike Greer led toasts. A four course dinner featured Miss Virginia Wary and Miss Grace Howard. Stunts included a balloon busting contest with prizes for top performers.

Drowned While Bathing in Watauga River

Peter E. Cable 59 of Sugar Grove was swept to death Saturday while swimming with friends in the Watauga River. He paused near shore for one last crossing and sank in midstream, with family believing a stroke may have caused the death. Funeral at Bethel Baptist Church. Survived by wife and four children Doris Nancy Richard Floy and others.

Jack Dougherty Dies at 76 in Tennessee Home

Jack Dougherty long time Bakers Gap resident in Tennessee died at his home last Sunday at age 76. Funeral services and interment were held Tuesday afternoon. He was a well known figure in Watauga County, brother of the late D. B. Dougherty of Boone and uncle to the Dougherty boys of Appalachian State Normal College.

Watauga Progress in Public Education Highlighted

County Superintendent lauds a decade of growth in Watauga education with consolidation reducing white schools from 67 to 51 while enrollment rises from 3 484 to 4 587. High school enrollment reaches 647 with 125 in colleges. Salaries rise from 67 to 95 a month and property value increases to 365 000.

Charles Greer Dies at 50 in Silverstone County

Charles W. Greer died at his Silverstone home Sunday after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at Union Baptist Church with Reverends Ed Hodges and Wellington Swift. interment followed in the nearby cemetery. Survived by ten children, his mother, five brothers, three sisters, including J. F. Greer and Mrs. Lee Teague of Boone.
