Sale of Mayview Manor Not Yet Confirmed By Court

Doubt was raised Saturday that Friday's $82,000 sale of Mayview Manor to J. A. C. Wadsworth would be confirmed. The hotel and resort complex valued at far more remains under lease to Donald J. Boyden while receivers consider the lower bid amid prior rejection of a $153,000 sale.

Broad Miller shot claim disputed by Burleson and others

Commodore Burleson of Morganton rejects H W Gragg's claim that Broadus Miller was shot while asleep and unarmed near Ashford. Gragg lists seven pursuers who allegedly tracked Miller for nine days and found no gun along the trail. Burleson challenges the affidavits and identifies Dolph Clark as the gun owner, while noting Miller was awake when found.

County Budget Shows 1927 Cutback Plan For Watauga

County Accountant Austin E. South submits a 1927 budget proposing expenditures $27 214 73 less than 1926, with a total county program of 158 086 02 for all county purposes and a five cent special tax levy for court costs. The report notes deficits in road maintenance and bond interest, and includes recent crash reports from Boone involving tourists and local drivers.

Storm washes out bridge on 69 near Banner Elk

A sudden storm swelled Elk Creek flooding a bridge near the Whitehead place on Highway 69 at Banner Elk. Traffic was detoured to Newland on Tuesday while a temporary bridge was built and traffic resumed yesterday.

Colonel Austin Watts Dies In Statesville

Colonel Alston D. Watts former internal revenue collector for North Carolina and a longtime state political figure died in Statesville this afternoon after seven days of failing health doctors had lost hope for his recovery.

The feature event is a brand new county designated the 101st to operate for five days with no politics in it.

County Plans 40000 Bond Sale Through Cincinnati Firm

County commissioners hire J C Mayer and Company of Cincinnati to market 12000 in county road bonds and 28000 in funding bonds. Mayer will act as agent, not bid, earning 2 percent commission with one third of one percent to the county attorney from the fee. The deal aims to boost price via nationwide advertising and experienced handling. Also, the state highway commission delivers 21500 of 125000 loan to the county highway office for Highway No 69 improvements.

Valle Crucis Summer School Sets Attendance Record

The Valle Crucis Summer School for Religious Education drew the largest crowd in its history with attendees from nine states and thirteen dioceses. The July 10 service featured Rev. Milton A. Barber preaching, and Dr. Wade R. Brown directed the musical program.

Beaver Dam Doings Mention Illness and Travel Plans

Mrs. Susan Moody remains confined to bed with illness. Mr. and Mrs. Chas Swift of Elizabethan Tennessee visited Rev. Wellington Swift. Swift has bought land in Texas and may move soon. Mr. John Sherrill plans to go with him. H. P. Dougherty has been ill for the past week.

Equalization Plan Defended by North Carolina Board Member

B B Dougherty of the eighth district defended the boards equalization plan in Raleigh, arguing for uniform property valuations and tax rates to ensure equal tax opportunities and uniform school quality across counties. He noted the transition will be gradual and urged counties to use a $100,000 reserve to aid teacher training and salary increases, addressing land value, tax-rate disparities, and school type differences as the main inequities.

Wake County Farmers Tour Reaches Boone Stop

A party of forty five Wake County farmers toured Boone on the final leg of a multi state educational journey. They visited Shelby Asheville Knoxville Norwood and Johnson City before returning to Raleigh. Two buses carried the group under John C. Anderson with W L Wyatt Burke Litt He T E Holling and others. A near tragedy occurred when a wheel ran off on Valle Crucis mountain but the bus was halted and rescued uninjured by a Boone wrecking crew.

Matney Opens Public School With 46 Pupils In Attendance

Ralph Askew and Miss Mae Triplett started the Matney public school last Monday with 46 pupils enrolled. Citizens expect the best school year yet. services were held at the M E church with Rev Horn preaching on Children honor thy father and thy mother. Rev F C Watts filled his regular appointment at the Baptist church Saturday and Sunday.
