Mr. Nile Cook of three miles east of Boone maintains ponds for rainbow trout brook trout suckers and plans a carp stock. He released 800 rainbow trout into Middle Fork and rears 1500 brook trout for sport and conservation. He opposes commercializing the trout and favors closing streams to stock conservation efforts.
The North Carolina Traveling Library is now available in Cove Creek. Hours are Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 to 11 am and 2 to 4 pm. The list includes works by Alcott, Collodi, London, Doyle, Grey, and Wells among many others with Mrs. Brooks serving as librarian.
Matneys School held a January 24 commencement program featuring three short plays Over the Rainbow Bridge Fooling the Agent and The Coolville Democrat Club. County Superintendent Smith Hagaman spoke on What a Citizen Owes His Community and What the Community Owes Its Citizens. Professor A J Greene presented diplomas to seventh graders Lois Baird Carrie Edmiston Mollie Edmiston Ray Townsend and Floyd Baird.
Hon Joe Murphy of Hickory spoke to over fifty Watauga Post members at the Boone Courthouse launching a Round-up Week for new Legion recruits. He urged members to recruit and keep alive wartime patriotism as NC broadcasts report results from the statewide membership drive.
At a Daniel Boone Council Jr O U A M meeting last Saturday night new officers for the coming year were elected. The slate includes Hill Hagaman Councilor J F Moore Vice Councilor W C Robertson Corresponding Secretary D L Wilcox Assistant Corresponding Secretary Howard W Mast Financial Secretary S B Greene Conductor Blaine Trivett Warden A W Smith Treasurer W S Christian Inside Sentinel B H Moody Outside Sentinel I G Greer Chaplain R L Clay Mack Luttrell and R D Hodges trustees. Plans for the year were outlined and Juniors are urged to attend the monthly meetings held the first Monday night.
Professor Edgar W. Timberlake Jr. of Wake Forest Law School was elevated last Thursday in Raleigh to Grand Master of Masons of North Carolina succeeding John J. Phoenix of Greensboro. The Grand Lodge may meet in Raleigh next year with a possible venue change requiring a two thirds vote. Phoenix proposed moving Grand Lodge offices to Oxford near the Masonic Orphanage, a recommendation the committee on jurisprudence rejected.
Mid term examinations were held January 10 and 11. New students enrolled for the second semester. An assembly featured a Lee Jackson program with Dr Rankin of the College praising honesty and Christian principles. Daughters of the Confederacy members attended. Basketball results show girls 2 2 while boys struggle. A Calliopean Euterpian party at the Masonic Lodge followed with games contests and refreshments.
Large crowds attend the opening of the farming institute as sessions begin. Principal speaker P. M. Hendricks of Caldwell addresses farmers and interest grows with each session.
Dr Brooks opens the first Watauga County Farmers Institute at Appalachian State Teachers College. About 300 farmers and town leaders attend as County Superintendent Hagaman acts as chair. Speakers cover sheep raising dairy production beef cattle and home economics with a focus on local self sufficiency. The event features the Boone Quartet and women’s sessions on budgeting and meals.
Watauga's long held unknown prisoner who used many aliases including John Broadway and Scarface Al Capone has confessed to Deputy Sheriff Poly Wike that he is William Sanford Jarvis of Iredell County. Jarvis is alleged to have forged a check using the name C. E. Watson at the Watauga County Bank and will face forgery charges at the spring term of Watauga Superior Court.
Appalachian State over Western Carolina 31 to 15 in a fast game. O H are led Mountaineers with strong floor play while Canipe and Hinson pressured the visitors. Fincannon topped Western with solid scoring as both teams traded the lead at times.
Statewide observance set for February 10 to 14 under Governor Gardner live-at-home program. Gov. Gardner’s message and daily topics emphasize daily food, cow, poultry, hog, and garden importance with state prizes for essays posters and booklets for white and colored pupils in rural and urban schools.
Ben F. Eller, 61, died at his Heaton home Monday at 11:30 after a long illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, with interment in the family cemetery near his home. The Masonic Order led the ceremony. Survived by his widow, seven sons and two daughters. He had lived in the same community all his life and was a civic leader in the county.
Ninety Watauga County sportsmen attended as Daniel Boone Chapter Izaak Walton League of America formed at the Daniel Boone Hotel Monday night. Key speakers urged forest and wildlife preservation and organization to curb poaching while outlining the chapter's future work and plans.
Judge E Y Webb opened a special adjourned session in Charlotte to hear motions in the Mayview Manor litigation. He ordered a $10 477.70 refund to the estate and allowed a $1 250 fee to American Land Company for a land sale commission. The session also addressed payments for repairs to the State College hotel in Raleigh and scheduled closing remarks for 2 PM.
