Hays Welborn a Stony Fork youth sentenced for retailing was paroled Friday by Governor Ehringhaus. He will be under supervision of the county welfare superintendent for an indefinite period. The court record showed he sold whiskey to buy school books and his prior conduct was good. He had not served any of the sentence due to its spring start.

Water Street Improves With New Macadam Surface
Work to place a new macadam surface on North Water Street began Monday morning. The road bed is torn up and stone is delivered for resurfacing. Adequate drainage will be provided and the street will be placed in first class condition. Funds come from Reconstruction Finance funds loaned to the State and local citizen contributions.
Son of Mark Squires Succumbs to Pneumonia
Houston Dunlap Squires, 29, son of Mark Squires and attorney, died at home after a week long pneumonia illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday. Survivors include his wife and child, his father, and brother James Squires, of Lenoir North Carolina.

Auto Fire Damages Garage and Vehicle at Hodges Home
Firefighters were called at 1 a m Wednesday to Hodges garage where W F Miller car stored there caught fire. The vehicle was moved outside and the flames died after the top was damaged. Investigators suspect gasoline theft and a match sparked the blaze. Miller had previously reported gas loss. The building was not harmed.
