State Game Warden C H England outlined conservation plans in Boone and predicted releasing 25 to 30 pairs of Mexican quail in Watauga County to mix with native Bob White. He cited hardier traits and broader reproduction with the two strains and noted pheasant hatching plans statewide with egg sharing from the Conservation Department.
Stockholders met in a lively session Monday afternoon to transact routine business and elect the board of directors for the year. J. P. Hodges was replaced by R. T. Greer due to relocation. Proceeds support school expenses with admission 25 and 15 cents.
Mr. H. Grady Farthing a principal owner and founder of the Cash Coal Company sells his interests to J. Walter Winkler who has been with the enterprise since its start. Farthing leaves the coal business to focus on farm activities.
I G Greer, moderator of the Three Forks Association, appeals to cutbacks to reduce distress and asks people to aid during the next few Sundays to ease the situation and keep children comfortable.
The Boone Civitan Club will host Ladies Night at the Daniel Boone Hotel on Saturday the 22nd. Wives and invited guests will be entertained with a 7:30 banquet headlined by Ira T. Johnston of Jefferson who will speak on George Washington the Citizen. Essays from four Watauga County high schools will be read for Civitan prizes with $10, $5 and $2.50 awarded to top writers.
Marion Reese a prominent Beaver Dam citizen died at his Boone home after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Mountain City Baptist Church and burial followed there. He was 61, a native of Mountain City and longtime farmer. He never married and is survived by a brother and sister and many nieces and nephews. A will left 1000 for Mountain City Baptists building program and 500 for Reese graveyard beautification, with three farms to be divided among relatives.
Hon. R L Doughton of this district backs H R 7825 Rankin bill to compensate disabled World War I veterans. He cites petitions from North Carolina and across the nation urging immediate passage and argues other bills aim to sidetrack this measure. Editor notes a misprint involving Pvitchard bill and clarifies no passage yet.
Professor S. F. Horton of Cove Creek High School joined principals and superintendents at a Topliff Hotel banquet in Spruce Pine to organize a Personality Conference aimed at student development. Horton named to the executive committee of the tentative group with a session planned in Newland on March 8. Nashville statement notes Hoover Democrats welcomed back into the party fold for August primaries.
More than 300 Watauga County farmers gathered in Boone to learn about growing and marketing tobacco. Speakers from Virginia and Tennessee advised small initial plantings, estimating about 250 per acre over ten years, and seed packets plus literature were distributed.
A Boone fire department reception by Blowing Rock in the Blowing Rock town hall honored the Boone crew with food and warmth. After returning from the event the Boone boys faced a major fire and Blowing Rock responders rushed in within twenty minutes to help protect the business district.
The Princess Cafe passes to new ownership with Mrs. John Greer and Roger W. McGuire taking over from Mr. Whetstine. The interior has been remodeled and a formal opening occurred yesterday. The new managers bring restaurant experience and expect strong patronage.
A gas line rupture at Standard Oil Bayway refinery in Elizabeth New Jersey caused a blast at the alcohol plant. Five workers were killed and about 60 injured with many burned and some feared to lose eyesight. The gas vented across coiled pipes toward a forge where rivets were heated nearby.
