Highway Patrolman Beaten Near Lillington Injury Serious
Fayetteville officer James Merritt was left in serious condition at a Fayetteville hospital after five men attacked him on the Fayetteville Raleigh highway near Lillington late Saturday. He was beaten about the head, possibly fractured skull, and sustained tooth loss and eye injury. Deputies arriving with two others halted the assault and the five men were jailed in Lillington. Two Exonerated In Investigation Of Tal Accident
Deputy Coroner Charles T. Zimmerman ruled that Shumake and Jim Simmons were not responsible for the death of 25 year old James Coffey in a Linville highway truck accident. Coffey suffered a skull fracture when cast from an open bed onto the road late Friday. the jury found death an unavoidable accident. Coffey, son of the late George E. Coffey, lived near Blowing Rock and was buried Monday in Reform Church cemetery. a widow survives.

Fire Alarm At Councils Home On Main Street
A fire alarm came from J. D. Councils home on Main Street Monday afternoon as smoke issued from the house. Fire crews traced the blaze to the floor under the kitchen range and soon put it out. Some flooring was burned but water damage remained nominal.
