Mrs. I. S. Greene, 61, a member of a prominent Stony Fork family, died at home after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Stony Fork Church with Rev. Roe Payne and two assistants. Burial was in Stony Fork cemetery. Survived by husband Walter and five children, plus three brothers and a sister.
A national holiday death toll reached 146 from various causes including auto accidents trains drownings and firearms. The Moweaqua Illinois mine disaster trapped 54 men with doubts about rescue and several bodies already recovered. The regional breakdown shows six in New England 16 in the east 28 in the southeast 21 in the midwest seven in the west and southwest 11 in the far west and 3 in the south. Poison liquor caused six deaths in New York.
Blaine Trivett of Boone was found beside a wrecked car near Boone and taken to a Mionganton hospital in unconscious condition. He was en route to Asheville Friday night, likely dozing. He suffered a badly broken nose, a severe scalp wound, and minor abrasions but is not believed to be critically injured.
H. F. Kincaid of Valdese suffered a broken arm after slipping at Vilas Service Station west of Boone. He received treatment from Dr. Hagaman in Boone and returned to his route Wednesday morning with an extra driver.
Shoppers in Boone County report Christmas sales as large or larger than a year ago with overall busi ness described as thorough and better than expected. Cold weather before Christmas aided the disposal of seasonal merchandise.
Mrs. Ira Critcher aged 46 died at her Bamboo home last Friday after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. W. C. Payne, with interment in the Critcher family lot. Surviving are her husband, seven sisters and a brother. She was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kerley of Blowing Rock and educated at Appalachian Training School.
W. W. Collins, 66, prominent merchant and early music teacher, died last Thursday at his Boone's Fork home after a long illness. Survived by his widow and three children Spencer DeEstie and Staple, his funeral was held Friday at Blue Ridge Advent Christian Church with ministers Gragg Greene and Isbell. Interment followed in Boone's Fork. pallbearers included local men such as Shoemaker Davis Estes Coffey Sims Hollifield Rupert and Smith. He lived thirty years in Watauga after moving from Union County Georgia and was remembered for kindness, Christian service, and a long career in teaching and operating a general store.
Mrs Larkin Welborn of Stony Fork died Tuesday at about 11 after a long illness. She was about 70, a Baptist church member and respected in her community. Survived by six children. husband predeceased. Funeral and burial at Stony Fork Cemetery.
Twenty seven hogs produced 9 261 pounds of pork at the Harnett County home and twenty one additional animals remain ready for slaughter.
Mrs J H Brendall Jr is a patient in a Norfolk hospital after a two vehicle accident on a highway. The Boone minister's wife suffered a broken arm but is improving. The couple were en route for a holiday visit with relatives in Currituck County and Norfolk.
The Cove Creek High School will reopen Monday after a two week closure due to a flu epidemic. Principal Sam F. Horton says influenza has nearly disappeared and urges all students to attend the first week for review ahead of examinations starting January 9.
Congressman R. R. Butler of Oregon, hospitalized in Washington, D. C., shows slight improvement after several days of critical illness. Physicians now believe he has a good chance for recovery. His sister Mrs. Jim Rivers of Boone learned the news on Wednesday.
Mr. Charles Taylor of Valle Crucis is reported greatly improved after an illness that began on Christmas Day and was thought to be a light stroke of paralysis. Friends now believe the venerable man will recover.
Mr. Bud Hefner of Boone Drug Company drove a car that was crowded off the road by a truck on the mountainside between Banner Elk and Elk Park last Friday. The car was nearly demolished but Hefner escaped with only minor injuries.
Mrs. Sallie Ragan aged 88 is critically ill at her home on Meat Camp and her death is expected soon. She was the sister of the late W. L. Bryan of Boone and the last survivor of the Bryan family.
Confederate veteran Harve Davis aged 92, of Boone Route 2, is seriously ill at his home with his condition unchanged and recovery unlikely, according to latest reports.
Reports from two distant parts of North Carolina indicate a potential new lemon crop. Mrs R P Huffman near Hickory picked five lemons weighing over six pounds from a two year old two and a half foot tree grown from a cutting. Lebron Spence of a Greenville floral house grew a lemon in a hot house four to five times the size of the average California or Florida fruit.
Welfare department and local groups provided toys food and essentials to about fifteen hundred people during Christmas. R M Greene Boone collected and refurbished toys while Jim Rivers delivered bags of fruits dolls and gifts. Boone High School and Y W C A contributed to relief efforts as the county faced hard times.
Mr. Edgar Hardin of the Saxon community visited with his two daughters Lois and Ruth, pupils at Deep Gap Consolidated School. Lois completed the fourth grade with all A grades, while Ruth finished the second grade with A’s in all subjects except mathematics. The girls earn congratulations on their fine achievements.
The House approved the Ways and Means bill by 230 to 165 to legalize 3.2 per cent beer, equal to 4 per cent by weight, as a prewar beverage. It marks the first wet victory since the 18th amendment. The Senate pledged quick action, but not until late this week.
Messrs. Frank Stubbs and John Greer are deer hunting in South Carolina game regions this week and are expected to return home here Wednesday evening.
A Christmas pageant was held at Old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church east of Boone last Saturday night. A large attendance enjoyed a tree with treats for Sunday School members and a general good time.
Washington report notes Senator Black Alabama introduced a bill to establish a five day week and six hour day in all industries and said he would seek early consideration of the measure.
