Watauga County hosts an extensive Valle Crucis gathering on August 20 1932 uniting Skull Mast Baird Horton and Taylor families from North Carolina and 17 states. The program featured music an invocation welcomes roll call of states telegrams songs toasts and historical synopses followed by lunch and an afternoon address by Dr B B Dougherty.

Four Are Captured For Liquor Offense In Mabel
Clyde Norris Jeff Norris Richard Campbell and Vester Warren all from Mabel were jailed Sunday on charges of possessing and transporting whiskey. They posted bond for a preliminary hearing before Justice E. N. Hahn next Friday. Deputy Wiley Day nabbed them near Deep Gap as they patched a flat. About ten gallons of whiskey was found nearby.

Veteran Police Officer Visits Boone on Vacation
Mr. M. V. Watts of Washington DC, accompanied by his brother in law Mr. C. F. Cornelius of Winston-Salem, visited Boone on Tuesday from Blowing Rock where their families are on a summer vacation. Watts, daughter of the late G. S. Watts, served 23 years with the Metropolitan Police and plans to retire soon back to the Watauga area. He discussed his work, the riot after the bonus marchers, and noted capital city public opinion favored against Hoover's re election.

Two Are Injured in Automobile Accident Near Rutherwood
Messrs Luther South and William Coffey were badly cut and bruised when an automobile driven by South struck a highway department mowing machine operated by Coffey near Rutherwood. Coffey suffered facial cuts while South sustained bruising and possible internal injuries. both vehicles and highway equipment were damaged.

Large Mountain Snakes Found. 63 Small Reptiles Discovered
Messrs J D Vandyke and C C Bowles of Deerfield report killing a four foot garter snake on the mountainside. Upon opening the body, sixty three small snakes emerged, about seven inches long, fighting as they were exterminated.

Dr Frazier head of Queens Chi cora College Charlotte will deliver the literary address at commencement exercises at Appalachian State Teachers College Thursday evening when bachelor degrees are conferred upon a class of twenty. Hon R L Doughton veteran representative from the old Eighth District visited Boone last Friday. He predicted Franklin D Roosevelt would win a landslide in November and that Congress would go Democratic. Doughton, a longtime Ways and Means member, may soon chair the committee after his tax reform stance gained national attention. He planned to speak in Boone at the noon court session on Monday September 19.

Squirrel hunting season set to open September first
County Game Warden H Grady Farthing announced that the squirrel season opens next Thursday September 1 on mountain streams. The season runs to January 1 with a ten per day bag limit and tougher penalties may be enacted by the Department of Conservation for violators. Madison Farmers stockholders reported a 4 percent return on a $22,000 business at their annual meeting.
