Dr O J Chandler a former Boone Methodist pastor now in Asheville will preach the annual commencement sermon for the graduates in the college auditorium on Sunday evening Dean Rankin announced. High Point educator T Wingate Andrews will deliver the literary address to Appalachia graduates on Friday May 5 as 45 bachelor degrees are conferred. In August 30 more will receive degrees and 79 two year normal graduates are noted.

Three Moonshine Stills Seized In Meat Camp Raid
Sheriff A Y Howell reports a record scare as three stills have been seized in three weeks in Meat Camp. The latest raid on Saturday yielded a 15 gallon still, liquor, beer, and two prisoners Conley and George Woodring, with deputies Farthing Hagaman and constable Greene assisting. It marks the fifteenth still captured since last December.

No Changes to Be Made In Board of Education
In Raleigh last Friday the House did not alter Watauga County education board members as the omnibus bill naming county boards moved forward. Changes emerged in other counties, with about twenty boards modified. The measure advances to the Senate where further local fights are expected. No names from Watauga on the pension roll bill yet. they must be reviewed by the county pension board and the State Board of Pensions before inclusion.

Gold Hoard Persists in U S After Roosevelt Order
The Roosevelt gold hoarding ban left about $900 million in gold outside the treasury and Federal Reserve banks. The Federal Reserve Board reported total gold reserves at 12 institutions rose to $3.366 trillion, up from March 8 by $681.956 million and by $50.04 million in the last week. For April 3, $600 million in gold and certificates had been returned, with $1 billion outstanding then. since, $81.956 million has come back and this week added $29 million more than the prior week.

200 Wataugans Apply For Forestry Positions
About two hundred young men aged 18 to 25 sought jobs in the Federal Forestry Corps via Mrs. Smith Hagaman, County Welfare Superintendent. Nine were tentatively selected for the first quota of 21, with more to come. selections depend on need and fitness. Winners will undergo exams, then proceed to Army camp for conditioning and immunizations before assignment to national forests with wages and allowances.

Rev A H Gentry Dies in Virginia
Rev A H Gentry, a native Ashe citizen and well known in Watauaga County, died near Fries Virginia on the 14th and was buried on Easter Sunday. A longtime Methodist minister, he once held meetings in Boone and was brother to Mrs Etta Horton who lived in this city and had many friends in the county.

School Bus Wreck Claims Four Children
In Salisbury North Carolina a head on collision between two school buses killed four children. Amanda Broadway 10, Mary Broadway 10, Frances Broadway 12, and Curtis Hartley 12 died. Roy Broadway 14 was unnamed survivor but not expected to live. The victims were all related to farmer Ira G Broadway.

After a 25 year ban a 3.2 percent beer is to be allowed starting Sunday at midnight under the Francis beer bill. Boone issues its first license for beer handling with 10 or 15 dollar charges based on on or off premise consumption. Would Exempt Church Property from Street Tax
