The Peer and the Painter at Petworth Portraits Tale

The Duke of Somerset, known as the proud peer, employed Seymour the artist to paint his horses at Petworth. A dinner toast leads to pride and dismissal, a rival painter failings, and Seymour’s witty retort about a one hundred pound note in a letter burned by the duke, culminating in a comic standoff and a quip that they are quits.

A Rumseller's Advertisement Proclaims Liquor Trade

An early 19th century notice proclaims the opening of a liquor shop selling Liquid Fire and familiar spirits. It boasts of drawing in drunkards and beggars, warning of riot and ruin, and promises swift service for a small sum. The piece ends with a quip from a Chicago paper and a Napoleon reference.
