Two Pearce brothers, almost indistinguishable in looks and dress, used synchronized alibis to pass counterfeit half eagles in New York. A Dutch grocer misidentified one, triggering a dramatic courtroom moment when the jury could not tell which twin committed the crime. The case ended with the prisoner discharged and the brothers later jailed for burglary in the West.
A midsummer scene along Otsego River follows Ora and Maria Gray as they confront a panther in a forest with their mastiff Nero. Nero sacrifices himself saving Ora, while a backwoods gunshot ends the beast. Back home Joe Mayweed and Sally escape a guard with a clock caper then wed after repairing the bewitched clock.
A narrator recalls a wheezy cigar bargain scheme and a math tax on cigars. The piece segues to satire on social figures, a Parisian youth on a German train outwitting two gossiping women, and a quick sketch of marital and military motifs in a shifting, humorous historical voice.
Around eleven thirty on Sunday night a blue dressed leg and a Yankee man in Sunday clothes entered Deacon Cephas Barker’s kitchen. Joe Mayweed, the intruder, joked about not being barred by orders to stay away and wondered about Sally. Sally descended with a candle and matches, then they lit a fire and sat down together.
