Rescinded appointments amid a spurious name swap in high school staff list

The school board rescinded appointments after Superintendent Chancellor found three names had been substituted in the list of teachers for high schools. He had intended Bruce Evans for assistant director of night schools, but C K Wormley A N Craig and E Jackson were sent to the trustees. The board held a private session and scheduled a future meeting to address the issue while promises of further explanations emerged.

Howard University Opens with New President Thirkell

Dr Wabtur P Thirkicla has taken the helm as president of Howard University elected last May. He resigned as corresponding secretary of the Freedmen's Aid and Southern Education Society of the M E Church which runs forty three schools in the South. The college of arts and sciences teachers college and preparatory school open today with the theology medicine and law schools to follow October 1. The freshman class is expected to be among the largest in the institution's history. The Thirkell family spent late summer at Lake Michigan before moving into the president's house built for President Rankin years ago.

Patrick McAuliff aged fifty seven died of heart disease in the hallway of a building at 478 Pennsylvania Avenue NW yesterday afternoon. The long time clerk had just returned from work in Alexandria and collapsed while heading to his room. Coroner Negitt certified death as natural. The report also lists a concert program for the Marne Band at the Capitol today at 4 20 p.m with pieces by Santelmann and others.

Detroit Youth Arrested in Diamond Ring Theft Case

Arthur Green a sixteen year old of Detroit was seized by Detective Charles W. Seymour with Washington police aid for allegedly stealing two diamond rings valued at 350 dollars from his aunt Helen Stelling. Green did not resist extradition and was to be used as a witness in Detroit authorities case.

Judge Campbell Honored for Long Interior Service

Judge Frank L Campbell an assistant attorney general in the interior department is praised for a distinguished career. Born near Haysock Pennsylvania he served in the Civil War era regiments and moved to Stars County Ohio before long. He held a board position for six years then rose through interior senior roles culminating in 1908 appointment as solicitor general of the interior department. He received an honorary degree at the centennial of Washington and Jefferson College in 1902.

Bethesda posse hunts horse thief after stable theft

Robber Caught in Act at Store Break In

Officer concealed in a store trap, Robert Brooks colored twenty two years old attempted to open a whisky cabinet at John G Cook’s 1908 Fourteenth Street NW residence after 1 am. Man seeks loaned money from stranger in hotel scheme

Joseph Koffier of Will Street Northwest appealed to the posse for help locating eight suspects and a young man to whom he lent $25 last Sunday. Koffier described the man as about 22, 5 feet 6 inches, neatly dressed in a gray suit, who posed as a telegraph operator in charge of a hotel branch office. He claimed banks were closed and that the money would run his office.
