Liaoyang falls as Japanese force Russians to retreat
On September 1 2 and 3 Japanese troops under Gen Nodzu Kuroki and Oku closed in on Liaoyang driving the Russians from their positions after five days of heavy fighting. Russian casualties reached about 9000 to 10000 with severe losses in the south road valley. Kuroki executed a flank dash around the Russian left forcing a retreat toward Yentai and Mukden. Despite initial Russian resistance the Japanese carried the field, converting Liaoyang into a Japanese headquarters while Russian forces withdrew along the Taltse and Han rivers.
