Both Sides At Rest Near Mukden In Stalled Fighting
From Mukden through Sept 10 reports say both sides are resting after days of rain and heavy roads. Russian rear guard has moved most transports and guns through Mukden while Japanese forces under Gen Kuroki push toward hills east of the city. The war office in St Petersburg reluctantly admits turning points are unlikely this year, with Kuropatkin to retire and a new campaign planned next year. The Emperor has received dispatches noting lack of fighting and continued heavy rains delaying repairs to roads.

River Queen Beached After Potomac Collision Rescue Underway
Excursion steamer River Queen carrying two hundred African American passengers collided with a lumber barge near the Potomac near Washington. The River Queen was beached in shallow water and all aboard reportedly calm with no drownings or injuries. Captain Pink Hart at the helm guided the vessel into a safe channel, and rescue boats converged as Commodore Sutton’s Vigilant reached the scene after midnight. The barge’s tow caused the disaster, with the river calm and crews dispatching to remove passengers through the night. The River Queen, an older Potomac craft, had been operating excursions to Wootley Hall and remains afloat in three and a half feet of water.
