Paris and Berlin report progress toward a Turkey Italy armistice set to end hostilities. Italy disembarks a modern occupation force at Tripoli yet keeps pressure, while Derna is bombarded and a Turkish surrender may follow. Berlin calls this movement effectively ending the war.
Special to The Washington Post reports that Guaymas, population 30,000, has been destroyed by a cloudburst or tidal wave. The Southern Pacific Railroad office in the area says it cannot reach Guaymas by wire for four days but denies knowledge of any disaster.
Salt Lake City reports a severe blizzard sweeping southwest Montana with two and a half feet of snow and fierce winds. Telegraph and telephone lines are down, power plants paralyzed, streetcar service halted, and business largely suspended in Butte as damage assessments begin.
Jacob Facher was badly mangled after a horse tethered to a wagon attacked him at a busy crossing on Delaware Avenue and Dock Street in Philadelphia. The horse seized him by the shoulder, swung him, tossed him to the street, and trampled him while bystanders struggled to intervene. his condition is described as critical with possible death.
William Rockefeller III traveled to London aboard the Mauretania from Liverpool, arriving at 1:80 oclock yesterday. He was in frail health and under a physician’s care while the voyage was delayed by rough weather. Reports say Meg Rockefeller is suffering from palsy and plans to seek a continental cure resort.
Special cable from Panama reports Col. Goethals denying a Gatun Dam slide. He said statements about a slide have no foundation and offered no supporting details. The interview was conducted in Panama on October 14.
President Taft toured Oregon and Washington speaking in Portland and Olympia. He endorsed woman suffrage with the remark that if all women vote it will be a success, and faced a brief socialist interruption at Castle Rock. Judson Jones of Mankato Minnesota announces a full Bible translation in his phonetic system. The work follows his earlier Alphabet of Orthoepy and has endorsements from Yale professor Lounsberry and ex education commissioner W T Harris. Jones is eight years old and began the project twenty years ago, taking fifteen to write and two more years to proofread.
Mrs. Helen Jenkins sues Nathan Allen over items totaling 197000 from a safe deposit vault at Illinois Trust. reports say Allen faces a 150000 government suit for customs costs and a 12000 fine for smuggling, with payment expected to total 162000. Also notes matinee film at Columbia Theater.
Richmond Va Oct 11 The Virginia State Fair Association directors praise a 2500 investment with Lloyds agency for a 5000 weather insurance policy that secured sunshine day of the fair. Attendance tops 70000, 10000 higher than last year, races quality praised despite a soggy track. Tomorrow the Richmond Blues from Atlanta plus Connecticut governor’s footguards arrive as a top attraction.
Cincinnati police report a 17 year old Hana Hogg found bound, unconscious in a rear yard on Agnes Street Cumminsville. A note pinned to her dress read we did not have acid to throw on her too and from the one you did not like the handwriting was a barely readable scrawl. The victim is from a well to do family and may not recover. The incident follows a string of murders of young girls in the district.
San Francisco figures show 96,869 for and 100,791 against amendment No 4 woman suffrage with 3 922 majority against. Statewide totals project a 7 520 gain to carry the amendment though many precincts remain unsettled. Recall and initiative measures feature in the political landscape as Taft faces a recall clash. Great Hagerstown Fair dates and Baltimore and Ohio train tickets linked to the event.
Frederick Springmann 68, a Prince George county farmer and former Washington real estate figure, was killed in a barn altercation with Harry W. Philbrooks a Maine man recently hired on the farm. Philbrooks says he acted in self defense after Springmann struck him with a club. he admits a continued fight and states he tried to finish work and seek medical help after the incident. An inquest held at the Springmann home directed Philbrooks be held for grand jury action. doctor testified death from strangulation.
