Famous educator Dr Washington testifies at his assault case against Henry A Ulrich in a Manhattan vestibule. Ulrich is acquitted on the assault charge after conflicting accounts of provocation and the alleged first blow. Washington, injured, says he was seeking a friend and was attacked near 1112 Hant Street.
Two new witnesses accuse Mrs Louise Vermilya of poisoning residents in her home including Polleamag Arthur Bissonette. Coroner Hoffman revealed exhumation of Frank Brinkamp, son of Vermilya’s first husband. Miss Elisabeth Nolan testified Brinkamp spoke of distrust in natural death and of life insurance tied to Boysen. Vermilya is jailed after a dramatic arraignment at Harrison Street Court.
Twenty two crewmen of the Greek steamer Lord Bryan from Theodosia to Antwerp were lost in the English Channel during last night’s gale. The Cunard liner Mauretania failed to reach Fishguard and proceeded to Liverpool.
Jones Follips jr age 22 son of Joba A Puillips of government printing office drowned while swimming in the Bay of Vieques Porto Rico. He joined the coast and geodetic survey last April and was superintendent of the Porto Rico station three months later. He was a math scholar at Central High School and George Washington University. Survived by his parents and a brother Marcus Phillips. Body to be shipped to Washington if recovered. Burial planned in Houston, Virginia.
Two merchant midshipmen aboard the Kasenga were stranded in jungle near Mombasa for seven days when a troop of baboons mobbed them. Griggs, 19, endured captivity while Horne returned to the ship. A search party used roman candles and red pepper to disperse the baboons, allowing Griggs to rejoin the group.
Wu Tingfang appointed head of a Shanghai revolutionary cabinet with Wang Yih toe Shen Wang Tung Li Ping and Lee Halen named to key posts though officials deny knowledge of the move. Foreign rights and safety for foreigners urged as Peking turmoil unfolds and international concern grows.
London telegram reports that an American claim of widespread U S support for annexing Canada drew skepticism in Parliament. An undersecretary declined to escalate the issue, noting Ambassador Bryce would report if the matter was deemed important. Champ Clark, in Nebraska, argued nine tenths of Americans favor annexation and boasted of winning every state if running on that platform against President Taft.
Chicago November 1964 special report notes cheaper turkeys due to dry weather boosting supply. Commission men say youngsters are most affected by weather while dressed stock sells at 17 to 18 cents a pound with lower grades around 14 cents. Retail price should stay under 30 cents per pound during Thanksgiving week.
In Augusta and nearby towns a September special election initially showed a 300 vote lead against repealing the prohibitory amendment. Official recounts later reversed the result, showing a 26 vote majority in favor of repeal. The measure thus passes after corrections to early returns.
