An explosion of benzine in the Roelofs hat factory at Twenty fourth and Green streets caused a fire that wiped out the main portion of the Church of St Francis Navier. The five story building was soon destroyed and the church roof and interior burned leaving only walls and tower standing. About 700 pupils escaped from the adjacent parochial school and three firemen were injured lightly. The incident occurred during Lent and the rector and two curates risked their lives to save the consecrated host and vessels.
