Tax Suit Bills Filed Over Stock Assessment in Anne Arundel

Two equity bills filed in the Anne Arundel Circuit Court challenge Montgomery County and state tax actions. The dispute centers on Baltimore City stock held by financial institutions and whether it may be treated as a credit against Montgomery County property taxes. Montgomery County officials sue Blair Lee trustee, with Col. Buchanan Behey as defendant. Blair Lee and George H. Lamar represent the plaintiffs. The core issue: if Baltimore taxes on city stock must be paid in Baltimore, can they be credited to Montgomery County property taxes? The state tax commissioner argues no authority to credit other holders. The Montgomery County suit contends the decision relates to state taxes only and that the tax return for such stock should be for county assessment purposes.
