Doctor Gardner Defeated in Excelsior Handicap Shock

New York June 27 Doctor Gardner a four year old Bannockburn colt owned by T D Sullivan and Frank J Farrell and trained by Weir was defeated as heavy public betting favored him. The 126 pound weight proved too much for the colt against Sir Lynnewood First Premium Tony Faust and others. Trainer Weir commented that hard races were needed before the horse was at peak form and that the defeat did not diminish his quality. The race altered fortunes for the bookies as Sir Lynnewood Tony Faust and First Premium drew heavy wagers while Ben Ben and Cairngorm were also heavily backed. Historic winners of Sheepshead Bay Handicap were listed and wagering favored Sir Cleges Resti and Mombassa in other events.
