Dowie Urges Tithes for New Temple of Crowdy Church
A Post reporter details William Crowdy, a Black religious leader in Washington, head of the Church of God and Saints of Christ. He and about 62 followers operate from a New York Avenue sanctuary, collecting tithes and guiding rites such as footwashing baptism while proclaiming seven keys revealed in Guthrie, Ohio. The movement includes a network of branch churches and numerous storefront ventures, with Crowdy pictured dining on chicken at his roll-top desk and preaching thrift amid a growing but controversial enclave.
