Tragic double shooting ends in death on E Street

Arthur Sackett a 25 year old former street cleaning department clerk shot his wife Flora and then himself on the sidewalk near 109 E Street NW last night. Flora Sackett died in Emergency Hospital. Sackett died at the scene. A note to Mrs Sanger and a history of nonsupport and prior arrests are reported. Witness Max Tass described the events as the couple argued in Pension Park before the shootings.

Bomb Kills Woman in Canadian Crime Mystery

A mailed bomb exploded at the Bilodeau home in Sherbrooke Quebec killing Mrs Theodore Bilodeau and gravely wounding her sister in law Miss Bilodeau. The device included dynamite sticks and a dry cell igniting a detonator. a note in French, likely by a woman, suggested jealousy. An inquest opened with no new facts and adjourned to Thursday evening.

Spanking Incident Sparks Major Monticello Fire

A reported spanking of a young boy caused an oil stove to ignite, destroying twelve business houses and three dwellings including the Wolfe house. Loss estimated at about 1900 dollars. Fire crews and townsfolk battled the blaze with aid from local volunteers.

Girl Dies in River After Melancholia At Chain Bridge

Miss Ednad Turnburke, 28, Ludlow School teacher, jumped from Chain Bridge into the river as two canoeists failed to reach her. A note pleading "Mother, forgive me" was found with her handbag. Police dragged the river from noon until dark but recovered no body. Relatives said illness and melancholia contributed. coroner said death appears deliberate. Her father George Turnburke, painter, of 42 P Street NW, reported the case.

Bandits Hold Up Train Near Springfield Illinois

Two masked men flagged an Illinois Central express near Glenarm three miles from Springfield. They cut the baggage car, forced the engine and car to uncouple, and fled after an explosion. Passengers remained in coaches as a special train with police departed for the scene.

Women Beat Up Broker Over Business Dispute

In Denver on June 17 Samuel B Austin, a real estate broker, was assaulted by two women, Mrs. Fannie Wyatt and Mrs. Elizabeth Schaffer. Schaffer, weighing 269 pounds, restrained him while Wyatt struck him with a garden hose. Austin left with bruised eyes and nose and was forced to sign a retracting affidavit before a notary.

Race for Life Ends in Double Tragedy Near Sacramento

In Sacramento on June 17 a car owned by Guy Pearce crashed while rushing Vera Brennan who had swallowed poison after a jealous dispute. Pearce was killed instantly and Vera Brennan died later in hospital. driver Herbert Woodall likely will die from injuries. The trio had been returning from a ball at Suburban Point when the accident occurred on a road near soft earth, the machine overturning three times.

Militant suffragettes jailed for conspiracy at central court

Six leading militant suffragettes of the Women’s Social and Political Union and one male supporter were found guilty of conspiracy to commit property damage. Sentences ranged from six to twenty one months hard labor, with mercy recommended for three women. The court warned leniency is unlikely for ring leaders as crowding and press interest followed.

Widow shoots doctor then kills herself in Savannah tragedy

Mrs Katharine Kittles Whisnant a young Savannah widow killed Dr Guy Brinkley and then died by suicide after a note to her mother suggested planned act. She had bought revolver cartridges, had previously said she would kill a man she loved who refused marriage, and married Brinkley on his deathbed. Dr Brinkley, about twice her age, was a noted physician. both bodies were sent to their former homes for burial.

Man Attacked by Snakes While Fishing Near Mountaindale

Piedmont Wan June 17 Special to The Washington Post George En sor a local businessman was bitten and bound by snakes emerging from a rotten log as he sat fishing near Mountaindale. He fought the reptiles off, but the strike left him entangled on arms and legs. He was rescued and treated after the attack.
