Howard Pew an 11 year old from Weehawken N J was killed in Atlantic City when struck by a car owned by H G McWilliams of Beechmont Park New Rochelle NY The driver George Irwin also of New Rochelle surrendered to police after taking Pew to a local hospital The boy was running to retrieve a ball when he stepped into the street in sight of his sister
Durham North Carolina July 22 Judge Alten sentenced all convicted proprietors of blind tigers including Leander Rochelle father of Mrs Brodie Duke to six months in jail and costs. Rochelle moved for a new trial denied and gave notice of appeal to the supreme court. Judge Allen rebuked the jury for acquitting Steven Chandler brother of a local policeman who was alleged to operate with wholesalers from other states.
Claud August Spreckels, son of Claus Spreckels, testifies before congressional committees on attempts to wreck his Federal Sugar Refining plant. He cites sand in machinery, rats in sugar, and drainage of vats. He discusses Arbuckle Havemeyer talks and a halting of the sugar war, plus rising sugar prices and tariff implications.
Panama on July 22 Henry L. Stimson the American Secretary of War denied reports he came on a mission about Panama politics. He praised the canal project progress and noted excellent rock fishing nearby.
Fadlo Mallah a 25 year old Syrian suddenly opened fire on a crowded electric car in North Adams injuring seven including two fatally. Motorman George Hoyt and Miss Martha Elsler killed. Mallah overpowered after firing ten shots then captured. police suspect sudden insanity.
President Taft announced that signing of the general arbitration treaties with Great Britain and France will not be delayed by the absence of ambassadors. Jusserand in Paris will sign the French treaty, Bryce may sign in Maine, and Knox signs in Washington. If ratified this session, the pacts will go to the Senate for approval.
Late returns from large local option counties show the state likely dry by large margins. Chairman T H Ball places the prohibition majority around 50 000, while anti leader Wolters concedes about 10 000 votes for prohibition. Dallas reports with a third of state heard the prohibitionists lead by about 20 000 as rivals claim both sides.
In Fenton Michigan fireman Richard Travenger of Grand Rapids and engineer Harry Hoskins of Durand were found unconscious in a locomotive cab after drinking water from the tank of the tender. A medical search found them in serious condition, suspected poisoning from cleaning agents. A special train conveyed them to Durand for treatment as officials investigate the incident.
Edward Hines admitted spending much of February 1903 in Washington during the Lorimer case and said he talked to legislators and urged influence for Lorimer. He recounted meetings with W Brown of the New York Central Railroad and A H Gary of U S Steel, denying focus on Chicago. He noted he did not discuss Lorimer with President Brown, and said he used general persuasion to push for the truth before senators.
Wilmington, July 2. After continuous work by steam shovel through undeveloped coastal terrain, rails were laid for the Wilmington Brunswick and Southern Railroad to Southport, 32 miles from Wilmington. The last spike was driven by President W Whitehead amid a large town gathering. The line links with Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line to serve a deep water harbor. Also reports excellent fishing at Chesapeake Beach with over 1.5 million fish caught yesterday.
Coroner's jury returns verdict of murder against Henry Clay Beattie Jr in the killing of his young wife Beulah Binford. Beattie and cousin Paul Beattie held in Richmond jail as witnesses after gun purchase testimony. Crowd reacts with excitement as police reserve units are called out. Beattie waives preliminary hearing and awaits Chesterfield grand jury.
