Street name change defeated over California Avenue split
The city commissioners reported unfavorably on Senator Gallinger's bill to restore California avenue's name in this city. The street runs from Florida to Nineteenth street and from Connecticut to Massachusetts avenues, split by a large apartment block, making the two segments unlikely to reconnect. Commissioner West argued the term avenue fits wider highways and the three-block street does not qualify as an avenue. The proposal suggested renaming California avenue to a highway yet to be chosen.
