Acres of Blazing Oil Fire Destroys Norfolk Plant
A spectacular Norfolk blaze began when a spark from a Norfolk and Western locomotive ignited grass near the Atlantic Creosoting Company. Sailors from the St Helena training station aided firefighting as tanks exploded and oil burned, threatening a cotton-oil plant next door. One sailor, H. A. Matt, was fatally affected by heat and smoke. Fire raged six hours, with up to 75,000 gallons of creosoting fluid and 50,000 barrels of oil involved, damaging mills, a pier, and lumber piles valued in the hundreds of thousands.
