Carl Hall of George Washington University, charged with killing his mother-in-law Frau Molitor, was shown witnesses who saw a man matching the suspect on the day of the murder but could not positively identify him. Hall denies the charges as he awaits further testimony.
Washington Post special from Trenton January 21 reports U S Senator John F Dryden named caucus nominee of Republicans to seek re election though only 36 of 44 Republicans pledged votes short of a majority on soft ballot. Democrats postpone caucus as contest narrows to joint session with possible floor battle and Wilson Stevens rivalries.
The thirty six caucus members are united to back Dryden and aim to sway holdouts. Opponents of Tyden claim certain defeat as Dryden’s alliance exerts moral influence and could clinch the election.
Harrisburg Jan 2 Special to The Washington Fost Berry repeats charges of graft in construction and furnishing of the new state capital. He cites about five million dollars in overcharges and duplicate payments to different contractors totaling at least 250000 dollars. He claims specifications were worded to block fair bidding and says the state treasurer will not authorize further payments on capitol contracts.
Special to The Washington Post from Austin Texas reports Senator Bailey agreeing to resign while investigating committees examine his record. The looming election, conditional on committee findings, pits Bailey against strong opposition as factions clash to postpone or proceed with the vote. Cocke’s charges allege Bailey took large fees from trusts for political services.
