Thaw in Court to Day Line of Defense Is Secret

Harry Kendall Thaw heir to the Thaw millions of Pittsburgh will leave the Tombs to-morrow morning and stand in the tribunal of justice to argue that the Stanford White death on the Madison Square Garden roof was not murder. The trial, set to begin the next day, may be delayed for a lunacy commission as questions about Thaw's sanity surface, with District Attorney Jerome personally in charge of the prosecution. Thaw has kept a strict vow of silence and is surrounded by cautious defense counsel as a large jury panel is prepared.

Lombroso on Thaw as hereditary degenerate and moral maniac

He cites Thaw's intense love for Evelyn Nesbit, jealousy beyond normal, and physical features seen as signs of degeneration. Lombroso notes Thaw's mind lapsing into epileptic vacuity before the murder and suggests alcohol and defaming stories triggered the act, while comparing him to other alleged madmen and fake madmen in crime.
