Ways and Means chosen to select and frame tariff legislation next Congress. Underwood of Alabama named to head the important body. Insurgency proves weak as members elect fall in line. Akin read out of the party.
The caucus unanimously nominates Champ Clark for Speaker of the next House, a first for a unanimous nomination in a first session. Teron Akin of New York is expelled from the party by unanimous vote for repudiating the Democratic faith. Underwood announced the Ways and Means Committee will meet after Congress to draft tariff legislation and to nominate Oscar Underwood as chair with thirteen holdovers. The committee will also study the tariff during recess and prepare a bill of bills for the next Congress. The Ways and Means Committee will act as a committee on committees with no members eligible for other standing committees.
Democratic caucus in New York scenes featured Champ Clark to be Speaker with a broad ovation for presidential prospects. Oscar Underwood named chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, while a full slate of committee members was approved despite tensions over selection methods. Special to The Washington Post from New York reports Frank W Woolworth plans a 58 story Woolworth Building on Broadway opposite the post office. The project, rising to about 700 feet, will surpass the Metropolitan and Singer towers, with a main 30 story block and a 28 story tower. Estimated cost is 7.5 million dollars on a 4.5 thousand square foot site.
Attorney General George W. Wickersham warned against distrust of government branches and urged strict moral standards amid calls for simpler law administration. Senator Root cautioned against restating settled law in new forms and urged concise opinions. the banquet and further speakers were planned for the Syracuse gathering.
Paul Morton president of Equitable Life Assurance Society and former Secretary of the Navy died of cerebral hemorrhage at the Hotel Seymour in New York after fainting in a hallway. He had attended a board meeting earlier and had planned to meet lawyer Paul Kiernan. The coroner ruled natural causes with no autopsy. His brother Joy Morton and close friends joined his wife upon the news.

Representative W. E. Humphrey of Washington warned at the Lake Carriers Association banquet in Detroit that Japan could seize Seattle Tacoma Portland Bremerton and key rail lines before the United States could field 75 000 troops to the Pacific. He decried U S merchant marine inefficiency and said the nation was unprepared for war due to a small army and an almost nonfunctional navy without merchant ships as an auxiliary.
Motions to quash indictments were filed in Federal district court by the Packers led by Louis F Swift and J Ogden Armour. They argue that the 196 immunity decision by Judge Humphrey bars pre 196 years as evidence and renders the indictments illegally drawn. The list of Packers named includes Swift brothers Fowler Meeker Connors and Heyman among others.

Bunnell a passenger conductor on the New York Chicago and St Louis Railway received Mrs Jennie L Schofield estate of 100000 after her death in 198. the Howards challenged the will in Norwalk Ohio and appealed to higher court alleging lack of mental soundness. The lower court ruling in favor of Bunnell was affirmed.
Richard Lara, 19, of Vinewood Avenue, Detroit, collapsed at St Marys Hospital after a necktie pin drove into his chest while he strained to hit a high note in a family chorus. Doctors attempted one operation. a second attempt was planned as his condition remained critical.
Baltimore news reports Capt Isaac H. E. Emerson a Baltimore millionaire drug man files for absolute divorce from his 111 year old wife. Judge Charles W Heussler to seal the case. Emerson said to be in New York, corespondent named in a novel and statutory grounds cited.

S Peter Servais, an Albany manufacturer, was swindled out of 400 by three men posing as insiders with race track tips. The trio, led by Berg and Lewis, lured him with small bets then staged larger payments, producing fake winnings before vanishing. Capt. Boardman is pursuing the operators, believed to be skilled gamblers planning further scams.
Dr H Gaylord of the New York State Cancer Laboratory announces a cancer cure after vaccinating a 17 year old boy. He says vaccination experiments justify belief in a cure and cites successful removal of neck cancer with no trace remaining.
