Senator Declares Helpful Legislation Needed for Merchant Marine

A National Board of Trade banquet at the New Willard Hotel heard Senator Jacob H. Gallinger of New Hampshire warn that without concrete measures the Stars and Stripes could be driven from the seas. Speaker Burton urged strong public sentiment and noted the board’s influence on Congress while others stressed upbuilding a national merchant marine and rates, subsidies, and currency. The gathering passed resolutions endorsing Senate bill 529, tariff reciprocity, and calls for government supervision of interstate transportation and insurance. President Roosevelt sent regrets to be read, and the group then met the President in the East Room.
