A Texas steer caused a citywide chase in Chicago on January 17. Cowboys, patrol officers, and hundreds of volunteers pursued the animal from stock yards through Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, and Grand Crossing before exhaustion ended the run ten miles from the start, with the steer finally captured and returned to the stock yards.

Boston Jan 17 Assistant Attorney General De Goosh sought the appointment of a receiver for Provident Securities and Banking Co after custodians took over the firm about ten days earlier. A visit by Treasurer Burlen to the offices and alleged property removals prompted an injunction filing by the state saving bank commissioners. Burlen’s visit led to police charges against Capt Edward F Gaskin and Lt Frederick I Smith for neglect of duty. Burlen went to Montreal yesterday. about 182000 in deposits left only 9450 in cash.

In a New York Supreme Court filing Justice Davis Pietro De Benedictis seeks annulment of his marriage to Marghetta Derekhédions. His mother Marie Carmella De Benedictis says he was sixteen at marriage and that Margerita sailed to the old country with Giuseppi De Benedictis, possibly eloping. The affidavit notes a Havre, France letter signaling the husband’s arrival there.

Twelve Meet Death at Sea From Saturday Until Monday

Savannah Ga Jan 17 A seaman Carl Sumner aboard the schooner Robert H Stevenson drifted on a gang plank from 9 0 clock Saturday until 5 o clock Monday. The vessel struck Diamond Shoals in a gale and the crew perished. Sumner was picked up by the German steamer Europa capt Keller after being adrift and nearly dead.

In Mount Holly New Jersey a nine year old Mary Clark vanished prompting a probe. Minnie Baldwin testified that Mary was assaulted and murdered by stepfather Albert L. Jones who then disposed of the body in a creek near Rancocas Park. Jones and his wife were arrested as warrants were issued.

Moody to Take Charge of Chicago Packers Prosecution

Special to The Washington Post Chicago January 17 reports that the trial of the so called beef trust case was postponed due to an attorney’s illness. Attorney General Moody plans to travel to Chicago to supervise the prosecution as Commissioner Garfield arrives as a witness. The packers aim to subpoena Moody and possibly Cortelyou and Garfield to testify about information used against them. They contend Garfield promised confidentiality of their information while the Justice Department used it to indict. In Key West on January 1 a second forcedores union committee refused to bargain. A 75 strong armed citizens committee escorted strikers from Leverdares hall to a steamer for Havana. They faced deportation for alleged harm to American workers and worsening strikes. Four agitators from Tampa were arrested and sent to Havana.

Slavic man shoots rich woman then wounds himself in Dover incident

In Dover New Jersey Mrs Hamille Clay Decker of a Wentville family was shot five times near her home by Samuel Monage a Slav who then mortally wounded himself. Decker died at the railroad depot about age forty five. Monage was captured at his boarding house within an hour and died from a self inflicted bullet wound. Doctors say he will not live long.

Fire threat at Oliver Theater disrupted by brave officer

Lincoln Nebraska January 11 a basement fire at the Oliver Theater nearly disrupted a Ben Hur performance. A policeman restrained a panicked spectator by grabbing him by the throat and dragging him to the lobby. The blaze was soon extinguished and the play continued as audiences remained calm and orderly. Murder at Pembroke Farm Ends In Fire and Suicide

Seven members of the Lakeman and Ayer households are believed killed by Charles F. Ayer in Pembroke New Hampshire. Ayer shot himself after saying it’s all up with me. Bodies recovered include Mrs Lakeman and an Ayer child. other victims and methods remain uncertain. Sheriff and county officials pursue exact causes as charred remains are examined.
