EXPECT PEACE IN MINES
Wilkesbarre Pa Jan 12 Information received here today indicates that President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers has received answers from all the anthracite coal operators to whom he addressed a request for a conference with the committee appointed at the Shamokin convention. Presidents Nichols Fahey and Dettery who have been notified of the answers spent the day in conference at Hazleton and would only say they were considering an important matter not for public. There is a widespread feeling among miners officials close to the situation that peace will continue. Mitchell is expected to call the Shamokin convention committee together at Indianapolis during or after the national convention to discuss the operators answer. It is said all answers are of the same tenor and the operators want to know the purpose of the conference. Local officials believe when he replies the operators will offer to extend the current agreement for a term of years.
