Trading was active, bonds led by reinvestment demand, and Hill stocks like Northern Pacific gained despite concerns over John S. Kennedy estate liquidations. International gold flows favored Germany and the Bank of England while New York saw little rush to secure gold, with sterling near import points.

Sugar trust offers peace in draw back cases

New York January 8 District Attorney Wise said he would forward to the Treasury Department a compromise offer from the American Sugar Refining Company in the draw back cases. The company agrees not to contest for any percentage of the drawbacks to which it is legitimately entitled if the government drops prosecution, with a certificate of deposit for 700000 dollars to accompany the offer. The company has already paid into the treasury more than 2000000 dollars in prior restitutions. The government alleges fraud overvaluing raw imports and overvaluing exports to gain a heavier return on duties.
