Raffles in Washington: Preston’s Nine Year Sentence for Jewel Thefts
William H. Preston, known as the colored “Raffle” of his race, was sentenced in the District Supreme Court to nine years in the penitentiary for looting Mount Vernon Seminary and wealthy Northwest homes. He targeted Mrs Agnes Reynolds and others, pawned jewels in multiple cities, and was aided by a pal who betrayed him. Police hope his conviction will uncover where the proceeds are hidden.
