Mayor Can't Spare George Brings War Vet Back to City Hall
George A Phillips, a 71 year old policeman since 1865, was briefly transferred from city hall to Church street station by Commissioner Bingham. The move alarmed the mayor who restored him to city hall, noting the veteran’s value and broad experience with city hall oddities and cranky visitors. Phillips, a Civil War wagon master at Winchester, recalls Sheridan’s orders and survived Port Hudson and Cedar Creek before joining the force.
