Chinese theater customs described by Mme Chung in London
Mme Chung, leading lady of a Chinese company now in London, notes lasting traditions in China where actors are social outcasts living in theaters with their own servants. Women rarely act with men, and in male theaters female roles are played by boys or young men, a practice that caused a sensation when she announced plans to perform in Europe.

European Plays Translate to Japan with Long Audience Dinners
A memoir describes aJapanese return from Europe granting permission to perform with men and translate European plays. The author notes performances in Japan are lengthy three to four days with audiences sitting on the floor and meals brought in. Distinguished figures sit on stage and there is no scenery only embroidered hangings. Acting relies on dialogue with crowds, doors, and impatient knocks. the audience understands the implied action.
