Dead Man of Wall Street Doubles Stock Wealth in Prison

Alphonse J. Stephani, the so called Dead Man of Wall Street, has seen his fortune almost double while civilly dead in Sing Sing and later confined to a state hospital. He managed stocks through an agent, with dividends reinvested, and his holdings, largely New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroad shares, grew to about 41 000 dollars before a box of securities was opened in Germany. The unclaimed assets and guardianship battles continued until the vault was finally accessed, revealing the extent of his wealth and the plans to resume his stock speculation under new management.
