Fugitive Named in Burlington Murder Case of 1896
John Willams, long sought after for ten years, is identified as one of the two Black men who killed John Henke in Burlington in 1896. His accomplice, Thomas Cromwell, was convicted in Lebanon Pa for a separate murder and confessed to the Henke crime before execution. Willams fled on a ship to South America, returned five years later, assaulted a white girl in Merchantville in 1901, and was arrested in Atlantic City for assault. A $700 reward had been offered for his capture.
