Object to grade crossings in Maryland Avenue debate
R Harrison Johnson, chair of the Southwest Citizens Association railroad committee, petitions the District Commissioners to deny permission for four temporary tracks across Maryland Avenue between Ninth and Temth streets and Ninth and C streets southwest. He cites risks to life, children, existing grade crossings, and increased smoke, cinders, and noise, arguing the plan could amount to confiscation of private property and create two deadly grade crossings near the Ninth Street crossing, worsened by nearby freight traffic and a historic fatal accident. The association questions the railroad company’s stated use and urges the commission to refuse the permit.
