Boston and Springfield men Benjamin Riley of Springfield and Orestes A Weed of Boston plotted suicide together in New York. Weed died at a hospital, Riley survived and faces a charge of attempted death by own action. Riley, later revived, told coroner of their boyhood friendship and shared trials, and that they bought morphine after meeting in Boston. The duo visited Grand Union Hotel, then bought morphine, planned to die that night, and spent hours in theaters and drinking before taking the poison. Riley expressed regret and said he will try to live and calm his lungs.
