Contests For Offices In Western Virginia District

Harrisonburg December 6 A fight grows over no Federal appointments in the Western district of Virginia. Thomas Lee Moore of Christiansburg seeks district attorney and U S Marshal Brown Allen of Staunton seeks another term. Moore faces strong opposition from ex Senator George A Revercomb Covington Republican nominee for attorney general of Virginia and present presidential referee in the Tenth district. Revercomb, a lawyer, was the legislature’s lone Republican senator. Moore is endorsed by local bars and reportedly supported by Admiral Evans and Congressman Slemp, with potential state party backing. Garrett of Allegheny County, cousin of Senator Foraker, runs for assistant district attorney against Joan C Blair. Rumors of a compromise would place Moore in the top post and Garrett as assistant, with Revercomb from the same town. Allen faces Pendleton Strother of Wise and S G Proffitt of Floyd for Southwest support. Party managers Slemp and son oppose reappointing the present marshal. M Botts Lewis of Harrisonburg, nephew of the late Republican gubernatorial nominee, is named as a candidate for marshal. Moore’s term ends next month and Allen’s in March 1906.
