Miners Refuse Wage Increase Says Federal Admin

The coal miners’ demand for higher wages was rejected by Dr. Garfield the Federal fuel administrator. Operators had previously granted a 45 cent per ton advance last October with proportional rises for day workers. Some operators paid bonuses to boost output, spurring union calls for a general raise, but bonuses are now banned to stabilize prices and prevent a mine stoppage. The miners remain under contract to wartime rates through April 1, 1980, and are urged to maintain effort to avert a coal famine.
