British and French Push In Major Front Near Arras

On a six mile front southeast of Albert to Grandcourt east of the Ancre British and French forces drove forward after heavy fighting. Achiet-le-Grand and Bihucourt were captured, with many German dead and prisoners reported. Haig said ground was gained to two miles depth as Germans suffered heavy losses and a German counterattack was repulsed.

Dr Brum Visits President Wilson in White House Meeting

Four More Ships Sunk With Three Dead 23 Missing

News arrives of four additional ship sinkings by German submarines near New York and off Toulon. Lake Eden West Bridge and Culture were torpedoed in August with 16 crew missing on Lake Eden. no fatalities aboard Culture. The Band y, a British passenger liner, was torpedoed near Malta but reached port. the U boat commander was sunk by patrol boats. A Swedish freighter was warned off American trade after being boarded off the Atlantic coast.
