Swim at Midnight Fatal at Colonial Beach
Walter Hamacher twenty seven, of 412 Third Street Northwest, drowned at Colonial Beach after attempting to swim from the end of the pier. An all day search failed to locate the body. Hamacher, an expert swimmer and local amateur baseball player, left Washington with William Schmidt for a river outing. Schmidt warned against the swim, but Hamacher stripped and plunged in, disappearing beneath the surface possibly struck by a buried pier or a cramp. Mayors and harbor police oversaw dragging efforts, with Arthur Hamacher traveling to Colonial Beach to aid in recovery. A separate note reports John Young, eleven, a fugitive from Chilton, Md., detained at the Fifth Police Precinct.
