Rise After a Decline in Southern Pacific and Harriman Issues

Weakness in industrials like American Smelting Utah Copper and Westinghouse contrasted with strength in Harriman issues. Railroads, especially Southern Pacific, regained losses while Northern Pacific hit new highs on rumors of extra distributions. Evan's speech had little market effect as brokers, led by Standard Oil interests, drove a bullish tilt. Crop reports favorable with July exports down. cotton and mineral oils rose. Iron and steel activity showed mixed signals. copper fell in London amid softer demand.
