Prison for Wife Deserter Under New Abandonment Law
Special to The Washington Post New York Aug 15 The judge in general sessions sentenced Charles E Lewis a dentist of 870 East 170th Street to a term of one year and ten months for abandonment of his wife Hygenia and two children. The case grew from his desertion seven months earlier and a pending divorce action filed by him at Sioux Falls South Dakota. Evidence showed he communicated with the district attorney and an indictment for abandonment was pursued as a felony. Doctors urged leniency due to his professional status, but Judge Malone ruled the penalty appropriate to the crime and did not excuse the defendant.
