Selling the Teacher An Oldtime Custom From Chicago
A Chicago Record-Herald tale recalls a district practice in which communities bid for the right to board a teacher. Farmers and wives crowded the schoolhouse steps bidding weekly sums, with a widow securing the contract at 87 1/2 cents per week. The bargain covered board and some chores, but the narrator notes the era’s social awkwardness and the low compensation.
