Fight for a Half Holiday by Washington Navy Yard Machinists

Machinists of Columbia Lodge No 4 at the Washington Navy Yard plan to petition President Roosevelt for a paid half holiday on Saturdays. A dispute arose over an executive order banning Saturday half days for government workers. Some workers already took half days last Friday and Saturday, hoping to be compensated. The Navy Yard superintendent, Capt Pendleton, says the law allows the half holiday but does not authorize payment for lost time. Those able to take Saturday off without pay may do so. those who cannot be spared will take the time on other days. Pendleton maintains the men have a right to the half holiday, but not paid leave, and some workers will be paid for the extra day only if the Navy Department directs.
